Be Strong and Courageous

Devotional
As Christians, we often are faced with tasks that seem impossible. For Joshua, it was the task of bringing the Israelites across the Jordan river into a land that was occupied and fortified mightily. Though the land had been given to them, they still had to take possession of it. They had to trust the Lord and leave the results up to Him.

Scripture Reference
Joshua 1:6
Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.

Action Point
As Christians, we need to remember that we will have battles in our lives, but the true test of faith seeing and taking hold of what the Lord has promised to us.

What Must I Do Pt 7

Devotional
As we look at the question of what must I do to inherit eternal life, we need to realize two things. First, we need to realize that there is nothing that we can do to earn our salvation. The second is that when we receive the free gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, it is the LORD who saves us.

Scripture Reference
Luke 18:26-27
And those who heard it said, “Who then can be saved?” But He said, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”

Action Point
Remember that salvation can only come through faith in Jesus Christ. There is nothing we can do to earn it and we do not deserve it. It is a gift of God and the only way a person can receive it is through trusting Jesus as Lord and Savior.

What Must I Do Pt 6

Devotional
As Christians, we all stand before the LORD as a needy people. We are not in need of the things of this world, but in need of His love and His salvation. Those who are trusting in the riches of this world are unable to enter into the kingdom of God because they are trusting in the things of this world and not in the Lord.

Scripture Reference
Luke 18:25
“For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

Action Point
Help people see their need for His love and salvation. It is only when they are able to stand before Him in need that they are able to enter into the kingdom of God.

What Must I Do Pt 5

Devotional
One of the greatest obstacle many people face is not the wealth and the things that they own, but the importance they place on their possessions. Few have found the true joy of opening up their hands and letting go, only to receive something much greater than what they once held on to so tightly.

Scripture Reference
Luke 18:23-24
But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich. And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!

Action Point
Remember that it is easier to receive a gift when you open up your hand and let go of the things that you are holding tight. Learn the true joy that comes from loving the Lord and loving your neighbor.

What Must I Do Pt 4

Devotional
Though Jesus told the rich young ruler to sell all that he had and distribute it to the poor and to follow Him, it was not about the things that the man had, but about the condition of his heart. If he loved the Lord, he would be willing to follow Him and if he loved his neighbor he would be willing to give of what he had.

Scripture Reference
Luke 18:22
So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

Action  Point
Remember that giving is not about the amount that you give, but about where your heart is. If you love the Lord and love your neighbor, you will give of what you have and follow Him.

What Must I Do Pt 3

Devotional
Though the rich young ruler claims to have kept the commandments Jesus mentioned, he still lacked one thing. He thought he was a good person, yet his self-righteousness was not enough. Not only was he prideful, but he was focusing on himself. It is only through Jesus blood and His righteousness that he could inherit eternal life.

Scripture Reference
Luke 18:20-21
“You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother. And he said, “All these things I have kept from my youth.”

Action Point
When people point to their own self-righteousness, we need to compare it to God’s standards and then point them to the cross.

What Must I Do Pt 2

Devotional
Often times as Christians we read a verse that seems simple and yet we miss the true meaning. When Jesus asks the question, “Why do you call Me good?” He was trying to lead the rich young ruler to see that He was God by stating that “No one is good but One, that is, God.”

Scripture Reference
Luke 18:19
So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.

Action Point
As Christians, we need to point people to Jesus Christ. We need to help them to see that He is the only One who is good and that it is only through His righteousness that we can inherit eternal life.

What Must I Do Pt 1

Devotional
Like the rich young ruler, many people want to know what they need to do to inherit eternal life. They have heard many different opinions from people, yet they do not know what the Bible says. They think that there is something that they need to do and fail to realize that it is not about what they must do, but about what Jesus has done on the cross in their place.

Scripture Reference
Luke 18:18
Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Action Point
When people ask what they need to do to inherit eternal life, let them know that there is nothing that they can do to earn their salvation because Jesus Christ did it for them. All they need to do is receive the free gift of salvation by faith through trusting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Why Good Friday

Devotional
As we celebrate Good Friday, I want to consider why it was good. When Jesus died on the cross, the work that He came to do was complete. His death paid the price for sin in full for all who would trust Him as their personal Lord and Savior. There was nothing else that needed to be done. The righteous requirement of law had been fulfilled.

Scripture Reference
Hebrews 9:28
so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Action Point
As you pray, give thanks for what the LORD has done. Give thanks that the work has been completed on the cross and that our sins are covered by the blood of Jesus.

Not My Will

Devotional
On the Mount of Olives, Jesus prayed one of the toughest prayers He had ever prayed. Though He knew what was ahead of Him, His prayer was, if there is another way, please don’t let it happen this way. Though He didn’t want to go through the pain, His prayer was that the Father’s will be done and not His.

Scripture Reference
Luke 22:42
saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”

Action Point
Like Jesus, we need to seek and to do the will of the Father. We need to go to Him in prayer, and say nevertheless not my will, but Yours, be done.
