Lamp Under a Basket
In the last few articles we have been talking about Light Confronts Darkness, Christians Should Shine Like Stars in the Sky, and Speaking the Truth in Love. In this article we are going to talk on letting your light shine. A light under a basket does not shine. There are things we should do and say that reflect the character of God. We should point people to Jesus and His Word.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
To understand this passage, we should look at the context. In verse 13 we are told to be salt of the earth. We are to bring flavor to the earth. Thus we should be doing something to remove the nasty taste of sin on the earth. One could say we are to expose the darkness of sin on the earth and replace it with truth in love, and then walk out the love. That certainly will bring some saltiness to the earth. Take note salt not only brings flavor, it preserves. Truth in love preserves/protects people from getting spoiled.
In Matthew 1:1-12 is the Beatitudes-Blessed is…The Beatitudes are talking about mindsets and behavior. One of the ways of letting our light shine is live out the Beatitudes. We are to walk in humility, compassion, and righteousness. We are actually to live our life in such a way that in spite of our love and compassion we are persecuted. Why are we persecuted? Because we are living differently than the word and because we speak the truth in love.
In Matthew 5: 17-42 Jesus is talking about the Ten Commandments and takes them to a deeper level. Comparing Anger to Murder, Lust to Adultery, stricter guidelines on divorce, making retaliation not an option. Jesus ends with loving your neighbors. It should be very clear that the Be a Light passage is in the context of living a holy life and speaking words of life. It should be clear in Matthew 5 Jesus is speaking truth in love. If you are shining your light you will confront darkness, you will shine like stars in the sky, you will speak truth in love. So much so that there will be persecution. in other words you will be obeying God’s Word to the fullest extent to the point it brings persecution.
So the question to ask yourself is “Am I being the salt of the earth? Am I shining the light of Jesus? If so I will confront darkness. I will not be silent.”
In our next article we will give a summary on this series regarding Confronting Darkness.
