Speak the Truth in Love

In our last article we talked about that we are shining stars and that shining stars overcome darkness. We also took a quick look at the concept of speaking truth in love. We mentioned that it does not mean to never confront darkness. In this article we will explore more the concept of shining stars and the concept of speaking the truth in love.

Philippians 2:15
That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

The Scripture makes it clear that as stars, we are to be blameless and harmless. To understand more clearly, if we look at the context of Philippians 2 it talks about Jesus not having selfish ambition, being humble, submitting to the Father, being sacrificial. Thus if we are going to be exposing, confronting , overcoming the darkness we should exhibit those qualities. We should reflect Christ and  thus keep our motives pure when confronting darkness and manifest the character of Christ.

So how did Christ deal with darkness? It should be clear to all that Jesus spoke truth in love, even if it did not seem like love at the time. He is the head we should do the same.

Ephesians 4:15
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ

So how did Jesus confront darkness? A variety of ways.

At times very gentle, you might say like a pen light when he sensed something in the person was receptive to change.
The woman at the well obviously had much darkness, and he confronted the darkness in truth but in a gentle way.

Cast it Out
When the demoniac came to Jesus He cast out the demonic spirits, you might say He cast out the darkness.

Confronted it with Strong Conviction
Jesus was not gentle with the Pharisees and certainly not gentle with the money changers. He was very direct, in the face, showed righteous indignation, and was clear to everyone that He was not putting up with any crap best word to use).

Went as far as to say hell is the consequence
When it came to certain sins, certain mindsets that reflected darkness, Jesus said the end result is hell.

We can see from the above that the concept of truth in love being only one way is not according to the life shown by Jesus. Jesus response was based upon the heart condition of individuals, the type of darkness, and surrounding circumstances.

It should be very clear that truth demands the exposure of darkness and the confronting of darkness. It should also be clear that truth must done in love. It should also be clear in love does not mean a condoning or excusing of sin.

By now it should be clear that light that does not bear light is not light. It should be clear that when stars are in the sky it is obvious they have overcome darkness. It should be obvious as Christians we are to walk with a pure heart, walk in humility, but also address darkness. To not do so means we are hiding our light under a basket. We will look at that concept next.

P.S. It takes work to speak truth in love. It takes total submission to the Holy Spirit and to be lead by the Holy Spirit. We all at tines either fail at speaking truth or at speaking truth in love.
