Be Thankful

be thankfulBe Thankful

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NASB)
16  Rejoice always;
17  pray without ceasing;
18  give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

The above Scripture says we are to rejoice (all the time), pray (without ceasing), give thanks (in all circumstances), because it is God’s will. These are not suggestions, these are commands from God. It is His desire for us to live a life of rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks. As long as everything is going good this is no problem. But if we read the context of this passage we see that it is not talking about only when things are going good. Let’s look at the context. Continue reading “Be Thankful” »

Articles on Dr. Ben Carson 1

Ben Carson not a Politician-Hurting Him? 1

What Are People Looking for in a Candidate?

There are two Presidential candidates that are running for office that are not politicians. One is Donald Trump and the other is Dr. Ben Carson. Until recently Ben Carson was starting to pass up Donald Trump in various polls. But now it looks like Trump is doing better again.  Who knows, maybe in a week Trump will drop down and Carson will go up. That is why I don’t think we should trust polls. It matters who is being polled, it matters what has taken place that day, it matters who the polling agency is, it matters if it is an Internet poll or not. Any candidate who makes decisions based upon polls is a politician.

Latest Polling
The latest polling says that Americans really appreciate and respect Dr. Ben Carson on his character, integrity, and dealing with his opponents. But they feel he is very weak on foreign policy, does not have a handle on various issues, and is too soft spoken. They think he will be able to confront evil well. In regards to Trump people dislike his personality and believe he is divisive. But they think he will ‘get the job done’ and stand up to our enemies. Syrian Refugees-What Should Americans Do? 1

syrian refugees americaSyrian Refugees-What Should Americans Do?

This is an extensive series in regards to the current topic in America about how America should deal with the thousands of Syrian Refugees. Sadly like so many issues there seems to be by many Americans the swinging of the pendulum to to the far left and far right. The extremists on one side say the only humanitarian thing to do is take as many refugees as we possibly can, even Christians are saying this. The extremists on the other side are saying we should not take Syrian Refugees whatsoever and we should shut down mosques and make all Muslims register. Many of them are Christians. One side appears to care more about the safety of the refugees than Americans and the other side appears to care for only specific groups of Americans. Both sides are missing the mark. We need to have a biblical perspective on this issue. It is clear we are to show compassion on the hopeless. It is also clear that we should use wisdom and not be foolish. So what is the solution? Before we get to the solution we need to look at the challenges. This series is my attempt to look at the challenges and the solutions in a reasonable, balanced manner coming from a Christian perspective. Syrian Refugees-What Should Americans Do
Introduction

Lately the Internet, the news channels, TV, radio, Christians, Muslims, others have been talking about what to do with the thousands of Syrian refugees. There have been very heated discussions. At times, the discussions have been very uncaring and what appears to be heartless. At other times the discussions seem to ignore the real danger of ISIS infiltrating Syrian refugee camps. Sadly many times there has not been a balanced approach to this issue. Many put blinders on the the real dangers and others express nothing but fear. To top it off individuals whether they are Christians or not are going to the Bible, mainly to the Old Testament, to defend their position-mostly those supporting no limitation or exceptions for Syrian refugees to enter the U.S. Continue reading “Syrian Refugees-What Should Americans Do? Who Sought Refuge as Recorded in the Bible

There are a group of people who make notation of people in the Bible who sought refuge and this in their minds shows why Americans should accept all Syrian refugees into America. The problem is they are not looking at this passages in context. So, let’s look at them in context and see what conclusion we came up with after sincere study.

This is a brief run-through of some of the people in the Bible (there are many more) who took refuge, sought asylum, or migrated for other reasons, including being sent into exile, escaping natural disaster or famine, fleeing from political strife, violence, or persecution, etc: Continue reading “Syrian Refugees-What Should Americans Do? Show Mercy, Justice, Love to the Foreigner

Have Mercy on Your Neighbor
“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” (Luke 10:29-37)

Correct Interpretation
We are to show mercy, compassion, and love to people who are not like us. We should stand in the gap for others.

Application
We should do all we can to show mercy, compassion, and love to Syrian refugees. But again nothing in the verse says we must bring them all into the U.S. as refugees. There are multitudes of other ways to show compassion and we should reach out to them to the fullest extent. Continue reading “Syrian Refugees-What Should Americans Do? Part Two-Bible Verses” »

Syrian Refugees-What Should Americans Do? Part Three-The Bible 1

Support Those Who Are Oppressed or In a Bad Situation

Support Those Who Fall Into Poverty

If one of your fellow Israelites falls into poverty and cannot support himself, support him as you would a foreigner or a temporary resident and allow him to live with you. Do not charge interest or make a profit at his expense. Instead, show your fear of God by letting him live with you as your relative. (Lev 25:35-36)

Correct Interpretation
The context is in regards to specifically Israelites and those who fall into poverty. You are to do whatever you can to help them and not take advantage of them. You should allow an Israelite to live with you as you would a foreigner. However, no Jew was to allow an idolatry or a pagan to live with them. Never.

Application
When Christian brother or sister is in poverty you should do all you can to help them. Even take them into your home if feasible. Just like you should do for a foreigner. So this is one of the few verses it would appear it is saying to take into America Syrian refugees. BUT, if taken literally your main focus should be Christian Syrian refugees and certainly not those who follow a false religion. Continue reading “Syrian Refugees-What Should Americans Do? Syrian Refugees-What Should Americans Do? Part Four-Bible Verses 2

Reach out to the Stranger

Leave Your Door Open to the Traveler

No stranger had to spend the night in the street, for my door was always open to the traveler (Job, discussing his devotion to God) (Job 31:32)

Correct Interpretation
This was Job stating what he did, not a command from God. You can be assured that Job as a righteous man did not invite individuals who could potentially harm his family. It does not say he invited every stranger into his home. You can be sure he vetted them first.

Application
We should welcome strangers, foreigners into our nation. Especially those who want to become a part of our society. But that does not mean we should have open door immigration with no checks and balances. Continue reading “Syrian Refugees-What Should Americans Do? Part Four-Bible Verses” »

Syrian Refugees-What Should Americans Do? Part Five-Bible Verses 3

Foreigners Embracing the God of Israel

Include the Foreigner When You Celebrate God’s Goodness

Afterward you may go and celebrate because of all the good things the Lord your God has given to you and your household. Remember to include the Levites and the foreigners living among you in the celebration. “Every third year you must offer a special tithe of your crops. In this year of the special tithe you must give your tithes to the Levites, foreigners, orphans, and widows, so that they will have enough to eat in your towns. Then you must declare in the presence of the Lord your God, ‘I have taken the sacred gift from my house and have given it to the Levites, foreigners, orphans, and widows, just as you commanded me. I have not violated or forgotten any of your commands.’ (Deut 26:11-13)

Correct Interpretation
Everyone in the area was to be included in the celebration. That would mean the foreigner participating in the celebration. Israel was to give a portion of their harvest to the foreigner.

Application
If taken literally then the Syrian refugees must participate in the activities of America instead of avoid them. There should be funds set aside to help the Syrians. There are all kinds of humanitarian efforts being made to the Syrians. Many of the Syrians that would be brought here would absolutely refuse to participate in American activities.
