We were going to discuss this solution later on in this series because it is the ultimate answer, but felt led we should cover this topic before addressing other solutions to racism. This article is specifically directed to those who are Christians. If you are not a Christian then you will not see this as a solution to stopping racism. Why? Because if you are not a Christian your identity certainly is not in Christ. It is in anything or everything except Christ. However, if you are a Christian then your identity should be in Christ alone-not your skin color, race, culture, heritage, upbringing, etc. This is not to say that any of these things are innately wrong. But they should not take precedence over Christ. If a person’s identity is not in Christ then they will always have an opportunity to be offended or to have pride. Jesus made it clear that we will have opportunities to be offended:
Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come!
If our identity is in the color of our skin we will become offended when someone makes a joke about the color of our skin. If our identity is in our culture, we will become offended when someone attacks something in regards to our culture (Even if they are correct about a certain unhealthy aspect of our culture. Every culture has some flaws, to deny so will mean you will most likely keep the flaw active. Blatant denial helps to feed racism.)
If I know who I am in Christ instead of my nationality, skin color, culture, etc. I can live above stereotypes, mockery, prejudices, and overcome any pride I have. (If I know who I am in Christ I certainly cannot have pride because any good in me is because of Christ, not me or my heritage.)
If I know my identity is in Christ and how He sees me, I can live a life where I am not controlled by the opinions or comments of others. My value and worth is not based on another human being. I cannot make a person to think differently about me if they are bigoted or racist. I have no control over that. What I have control over is how I view myself. If I know my value and worth in Christ I do not have to defend myself, attack others, or let others prejudices control my behavior.
If I know my identity in Christ I realize I cannot have any pride thinking my race or culture is superior to others. I understand there is only one race-the human race. God made this clear in Galatians 3:27-28:
27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
If every Christian will focus on their identity in Christ alone there is no room for racism whatsoever. You cannot have your identity in Christ and have racism.
So one of the solutions to counteract racism is to make your identity in Christ alone. Everything else is secondary. If your identity is in Christ alone, you will acknowledge that there are some stereotypes about your culture that have some truth in them and you will do your part to not manifest those stereotypes and instead reflect the character of Jesus Christ. You will acknowledge that maybe you have had some prejudices in regards to other races/cultures and ask God to help you to see others in the eyes of Jesus Christ.
So who are we in Christ? That takes an entire article. Click here to learn who you are in Christ and what the benefits are for every follower of Jesus Christ.
If you are not a Christian you can still do your part to break racism. It will just be harder for you and you will always have the potential of being offended and then reacting based upon that offense. Why not consider having a relationship with Jesus Christ-a relationship that guarantees you eternal life. Have questions about Christianity? Here are some answers for you. Check it out!
