Revelation 3:1-6 (NASB77)
Church of Sardis
1 "And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: He who has the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars, says this: ‘ I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead."
You are alive, but you are dead-You can know Jesus but be dead, asleep in your relationship with Him. You can have a religious relationship but not a love relationship.
2 ‘Wake up, and strengthen the things that remain, which were about to die; for I have not found your deeds completed in the sight of My God."
Wake up-careless and not attentive
Strengthen the things that remain-This means there were some things lost. It is our responsibility to grow and keep a close relationship with God, not His. We have a free will. He will give us strength but we must draw close to Him.
11 And do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them;
12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret.
13 But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.
14 For this reason it says, " Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you."
15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise,
16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil.
17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Deeds not completed-Beginning good deeds but not completing them. Living by emotions. Excited but when challenging give up.
3 ‘Remember therefore what you have received and heard; and keep it, and repent. If therefore you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come upon you.’
Remember what received and heard-Pay attention to what is being spoken by Christian leaders and receive what is being taught. Be teachable.
Repent-If you have been rebellious or lackadaisical about your Christianity you need to repent.
I will come like a thief-You will be caught off guard and the consequences could be drastic.
4 ‘But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white; for they are worthy.’
A few-This church was in bad shape.
Soiled garments-blatant sin was taking place in the church.
They will walk with me in white-means some will not walk with Jesus because they will not be clothed in His righteousness.
5 ‘He who overcomes shall thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father, and before His angels.’
He who overcomes-if don’t overcome will not be clothed with righteousness.
Will not erase his name-This means name can be erased from the book of life. Which means the name had to be in the book of life at one time.
My Father-another example of Jesus relationship with the Father/God.
6 ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’
