12 "And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: The One who has the sharp two-edged sword says this:
Two-edged sword-The Word of God, so Jesus is the Word of God. Two-edged sword (the Word) exposes lies and reveals truth. The Word pierces the soul-brings conviction.
12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
13 ‘I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is; and you hold fast My name, and did not deny My faith, even in the days of Antipas, My witness, My faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.
I know where you dwell-God knows our circumstances and trials
You hold fast-they were faithful to Jesus
Antipas-a martyr for Christ
14 ‘But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit acts of immorality.
Few things against you-no matter how much we may serve God we fall short at times.
Hold the teaching of Balaam-Christians at times hold unto teachings that are not biblical. It is clear from this passage that Jesus does not like this. We should follow the traditions of men, but the teachings of Scripture.
15 ‘Thus you also have some who in the same way hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans.
Nicolaitans-Appears the Christians at Pergamum were susceptible to false doctrine. Thus you can be faithful to Jesus yet be deceived.
16 ‘Repent therefore; or else I am coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of My mouth.
Repent therefore-when you realize that you have been following false doctrine or the teachings of men instead of the word of God you need to repent.
17 ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.’
Who overcomes-If overcome given a new name. If don’t overcome don’t get a new name. Only people in heaven get a new name.
