Revelation 2:1-7 Commentary
1 "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: The One who holds the seven stars in His right hand, the One who walks among the seven golden lampstands, says this:
Church of Ephesus-Was this passage to the church or the people of the church? Directed to Christians or non-Christians? Will see directed towards individuals that are Christians, not just the overall church.
Who is the One?-Jesus
2 ‘ I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot endure evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false;
Know your deeds-Jesus knows our deeds, trials, struggles, and our perserverance
You put to test those who call themselves Apostles-people are not always what they say they are.
3 and you have perseverance and have endured for My name’s sake, and have not grown weary.
Endure false teachers-do not let them wear you out and cause you to give up
4 ‘But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.
Left first love-we can honor God out of duty but be try spiritually. We can be doing good deeds and not have a close relationship. We can become religious.
5 ‘Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you, and will remove your lampstand out of its place– unless you repent.
Remember where you have fallen-remember when you first came to Christ and the joy, peace
Remove your lampstand-was this applicable only to the church or the people? It becomes clear throughout Revelation God is talking to individual Christians, not just the Church.
What does it mean remove the light? Who gives us light as believers? Holy Spirit?
6 ‘Yet this you do have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
Nicolaitans-Ephesus Christians hate the deeds of certain groups.
‘I also hate’-Jesus hates, so to hate is not sin. We should hate evil.
7 ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of God.’
He who has an ear-Directed towards people, not just the church
Have ear to hear-we need to listen to Jesus and hear what He says, not what man says.
Him who overcomes-if you do not overcome you will not eat of the tree of life.
1 Corinthians 6:9-11
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,
10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God.
