Revelation 1:1-9 (NASB)
1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His bond-servants, the things which must soon take place; and He sent and communicated it by His angel to His bond-servant John,
Revelation: not detailed future, but overall future; the book is about Jesus second advent
The revelation came from God to Jesus to angel to man, thus the revelation came from God. The Father reveals Himself and His will in, and by, His Son.
Bond-servants: Not only John but all servants
Soon Take Place: Soon compared to eternity.
The book was written before the destruction of Jerusalem, and some of the prophecies in it relate to that destruction, and the civil wars among the Romans, thus the events did take place soon. It is also referring to the state of the Church in all ages thus “In a short time the train of these visions will be put in motion:
2 who testified to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw.
What is the testimony of Jesus Christ? Revelation 19:10 (NASB) Then I fell at his feet to worship him. But he *said to me, "Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus; worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."
3 Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near.
Blessed: escape evils mentioned in the revelation
Reads & hears: means to hear and adhere to
4 John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace, from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne,
John last Apostle alive: so readers were attentive
Grace & Peace: No peace without grace
Who is, who was, who is to come” God and/or Jesus
Seven Spirits from throne: Seven angels, seven cohorts, or Holy Spirit. Seven represents perfection
5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood—
Firstborn of the dead: First to die, rise from the dead, and go to the Father
6 and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
We are priests and are ‘kingdom people’. Priests have access to God.
1 Peter 2:9-10 (NASB) 9 But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY.
7 BEHOLD, HE IS COMING WITH THE CLOUDS, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. So it is to be. Amen.
Clouds: symbol wrath to sinners
Every eye see Him and pierced Him: At time of writing referencing to his coming judgment to destroy Jerusalem because of the Jews rejection of Jesus as Messiah. Those who commit apostasy wound him by their walking away from Him. That is from Judas to the end of the age.
Mourn: unconverted, saved for sorrow of their sin
8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."
Alpha & Omega: First and last letter of Greek alphabet
Almighty: El Shaddai, lord of hosts, all powerful.
9 I, John, your brother and fellow partaker in the tribulation and kingdom and perseverance which are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.
John suffered as a faithful servant not from being an evildoer.
John on Patmos because of: Sharing the Gospel and testimony of Jesus-speaking prophetically about Jesus.
