Patience With My Patients

Dear Readers,

Doctors and nurses get burnout and I’m finally realizing why…

Today was a difficult volunteer day.  I have even debated canceling my Saturday job because I haven’t felt useful lately.

The final patient of my Saturday rounds was pure agony.  I felt like a total failure.  A cancer patient, very ill, was frightened and in pain.  I didn’t spend time or pray in that room when it is absolutely what I should have done.  But, at the end of my rounds today I was tired, hungry, and useless.  I suddenly just wanted to go home!

What kind of a volunteer am I if these little things get to me!  And, the word CANCER really drains me, since I am a cancer survivor.  I tend to use the excuse that I am 75 years old and running out of steam.

I’m beginning to think it is emotional!  Understanding just a little maybe, why the doctors and nurses get burnout.  Being with sick, weak, and dying people all day long, must drain the life and the joy out of them.  I know I am feeling it after 10 years of service as a patient volunteer.

But, hearing the Lord’s voice all night long Saturday, telling me to return to that person Sunday after church, I begged my husband to take me back to the hospital so I could just bring a few of my cancer stories to a very sweet and frightened person.  So he did!  He always tries very hard to please me, help me, and encourage me.  He is my soulmate for sure!

So, when I returned to that final patient’s room on Sunday morning just for a few minutes as the doctors were busily working in there, the pure joy on that person’s face was incredible!  Just to see me once more was enough to encourage one single person not to give up, not to quit, not to get down and out, but to fight, fight, fight to recover!  We prayed special words to the Lord hopefully strengthening this struggling body to survive, “Because God isn’t finished with you yet'” I insisted.

Amazing how the Lord gently urged me to return and wouldn’t let up on me until I did!

Love in Christ,    Claire  xoxo
