The Christmas Story

Dear Readers,

I hope and pray this story brings a little joy to your lives…

THE CHRISTMAS STORY,    Journal Entry-  December, 1992

While driving my city bus this morning, I heard a beautiful holiday story I would like to share.

A middle-aged passenger boarded my ride and sat nearby.  I started making small talk and asked him, “Did you have a nice Christmas?”

“Oh yes!  It was really special!”  he told me excitedly.  Than an incredible narration unfolded.

It seems ten years ago he lost his three children.  He was an alcoholic, with a runaway wife, and his offspring, two girls and a boy, were taken and put into foster care at eight, nine, and ten years old.  Soon after, they were adopted and raised by a couple who took all three of them.  He immediately lost touch with his children.

Years passed and he cleaned himself up and got sober.   He never stopped thinking about his kids.  Eventually, he rebuilt his life and married another woman who had children of her own.

Then, one day just before Christmas, a phone call came from out of the past.  When he said hello, his daughter spoke.  “Could I speak to John Smith please?” the sweet voice asked.

“This is John!” he said unsuspectingly.

“Hello daddy, this is Emily!  We would like to come down to spend Christmas with you this year!  Would that be okay?” she politely asked.  Shock came over this changed man.  He could not believe his ears.  After ten long years of wondering where they were, his children had found him!

“Yes, yes, yes!” he shouted into the phone, still in shock.  “Come down!  I would love to see all of you!”

They soon arrived from their trip and brought a carload of gifts for him and his stepchildren.  They brought their dad fishing equipment, because they remembered how he used to take them fishing all the time when they were young.

His offspring had grown and matured to 18, 19, and 20 years old.  His son grew to be over six feet tall, and his two daughters were now beautiful young women.  After the holidays, they all decided to visit each other more often and keep in touch by phone regularly.

“Oh yes, my Christmas was very special indeed!” John told me.  As I approached his exit and pulled to a stop, he looked back at me and said, “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!”

Mr. Smith has no idea how much he made my day!  But God does!  I truly believe there is a divine reason for everything that happens in our lives.

Love in Christ,     Claire  xoxo

Matt. 1:20-23,  “But, while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.  And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.  So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated,  “God with us.”  (NKJV)
