Follow Through On Spiritual Urges

Dear Readers,

Sometimes we hear things in our minds, and they don’t go away until we follow through and do what the Holy Spirit is urging us to do.  This incident happened one time with my brother…

Here’s one I need to enter in my journal.  My kid brother hasn’t called me for a few weeks.  Very unusual.  I have been thinking about him and he has been heavy on my mind the last few days.  I even wondered why he hasn’t called  because he is so faithful about that.   For a week or so now, the Holy Spirit has been urging me to call him, but I kind of ignored the feeling.  (Brian is a sociology professor and has great faith in Jesus.)

Finally, today I decided while it was quiet and I was alone, to give in and stop procrastinating and call him.

“Hi Bry, how’s it going?  Haven’t talked to you for a while!”

“Wow, I didn’t think you would call!” he said.  Then after we spoke a few minutes he shared something quite personal.

“Clay, you didn’t know this but I have been praying and asking God for a sign.  I’m scheduled for laser surgery in a few days and I’m uncomfortable with the idea of it.  The way the doctor spoke, there doesn’t seem to be a sense of urgency.  It seems like assembly line surgery to me.  I’m nervous because I’m already blind in one eye!  So, I asked God to please have you call before the 23rd (surgery day) of this month as a sign!  I knew you had this procedure done and I wanted your opinion.  I didn’t want to do it just because…”

“My doctor brings in this laser machine and lines people up back to back and piles them in, all in one day!”

“Well, what did he tell you?  Is your pressure high?” I asked

“No, not especially, it is 18!”

“Did he do any Glaucoma testing, you know flashing lights, tests for any eye damage?” I dug a little more.

“No, none of that!  He just said the fluid is thin!  It would be a good idea to laser it!”

I proceeded to tell him all the tests that my doctor ran before deciding to do surgery on me.  I also told my brother that I begged my doctor to do both eyes and he refused and said, “Claire, I don’t do unnecessary surgeries!  Your other eye is not damaged, it only has a little high pressure!  I’ll watch it closely!”

I told my sibling I just had my 6 month check up and my pressure was a tiny bit higher than last exam, and still my doctor said, ” No Claire, there is no need to laser the other eye!”

It was then that my little brother realized he was just being thrown into a group and he decided he didn’t want any part of unnecessary surgery.  He immediately saw my phone call as an answer to his prayers.  We chatted a while longer.  It was good to talk to him.  I thought, “Thank you Lord for continually urging me to call.  I pray my sibling’s decision to postpone the procedure was correct.”

Love in Christ,  Claire xoxo

PS  That urging was two years ago.  My younger brother’s eyes are doing well.  He still works full time at 70 years old.

Romans, 8:26+27, “In the same way the Spirit helps us in our weakness.  We do not know what we are to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.  And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.” (NIV)
